New scandal Appear on the horizon

Rebecca Gayheart is most definitely adding to the gaiety of the nation today. News has leaked out of how she has taken the lead actress role in her husband, Eric Dane's sex tape.

Now it has to be said that while the idea that a married couple might actually have sex together sounds fairly normal to all of us out here in Flyover Country it might in fact cause the odd frisson of shock in the racier parts of Hollywood.

Fortunately for the social standing in that locality of both Rebecca Gayheart and her husband they did not in fact do anything quite so boring as simply film themselves. Rather, they added in the assistance of Kari Ann Peniche, the former Miss Teen USA.

And it is this that is causing the stir. No, not even a threesome (however exotic it might sound to us) is enough to raise more than one eyebrow in the nation's entertainment capital. Rather, it is upon precisely what terms Kari Ann joined them. For there is a suspicion (and at present it is no more than that) that Kari Ann joined the fun as a result of commerce rather than lust. Wonderful Subject Today this my Opinion

Perhaps Elizabeth Barrett Browning's most well-remembered poem is called, "How do I love thee, let me count the ways?"

Elizabeth is a true image of a woman of determination who proved against all odds that love conquers all.

According to this biography, "Elizabeth and Robert, who was six years her junior, exchanged 574 letters over the next twenty months. Immortalized in 1930 in the play The Barretts of Wimpole Street, by Rudolf Besier (1878-1942), their romance was bitterly opposed by her father, who did not want any of his children to marry.

"In 1846, the couple eloped and settled in Florence, Italy, where Elizabeth's health improved and she bore a son, Robert Wideman Browning. Her father never spoke to her again. Elizabeth's Sonnets from the Portuguese, dedicated to her husband and written in secret before her marriage, was published in 1850." Poets.org/poet

Her name surfaced recently, however, not because of her love poetry but because of a Turner Classic Movie, "The Barretts of Wimpole Street," a version with Jennifer Jones. Norma Shearer portrayed Elizabeth Barrett in an earlier version. Here is the famous poem.

Turning off the blast of tropical cyclone

the National Weather Service predicted (and we noted in an earlier news brief below), Tropical Storm Bill became Hurricane Bill and is heading north. The question is: Will it continue to head north and become extratropical, dissipating up around Nova Scotia as some do, or could it turn inland and threaten our Mid-Atlantic states? The map of its projected path does make it seem that it could be a threat.

Just something to keep an "eye" on, so to speak. Weather.com has this to say: "There's a good chance that rough surf may also impact the East Coast of the United States this weekend and early next week if Bill follows its current forecast path."

Who's in for a wet spell? Outer Banks? Long Island? Cape Cod? Or is it us here in Hudson County? Only time will tell.

Simone evicted from 'Big Brother 11'

LOS ANGELES - Chima Simone is no longer in the "Big Brother" house.

CBS said Saturday producers removed the 32-year-old freelance journalist from the voyeuristic reality series for breaking the show's rules.

The network also said Simone, from West Hollywood, Calif., will not be part of the jury that selects the $500,000 grand prize winner.

Seven contestants remain on "Big Brother 11."

Duff brings charity work to Colombia

BOGOTA - Singer-actress Hilary Duff brought her Blessings in a Backpack program to Colombia Friday to distribute 3,000 knapsacks of food to poor children in a school district south of the capital city.

She was greeted by Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno, who Duff said gave her "an amazing invitation" to bring the program to Colombia.

"We've been working for four years feeding children over the weekends," she said. "They invited us to come here, and we got our first school in Bogota."

Duff and USA Harvest founder Stan Curtis started Blessings in a Backpack for children who get their best meals at school, giving them backpacks of food every Friday to take home and share with their families when they're away from their main source of nutrition. The program serves 106 schools and 26,000 children in the U.S. and Canada.

Spat at Gosselin home gets police response

SINKING SPRING, Pa. - Police in eastern Pennsylvania say they responded to an argument at the home of Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of the TLC show "Jon & Kate Plus 8."

Lower Heidelberg police say they calmed the situation down after going to the home at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. There were no arrests or citations. Police did not say who was involved in the incident or cite the reason for the argument.

The TLC show is back on the air after a hiatus following the Gosselins' breakup in June. New episodes document the Gosselins "separately parenting" their eight children.

Seinfeld scheduled as Leno's 1st guest

NEW YORK - NBC says Jerry Seinfeld will be the first guest on the premiere of "The Jay Leno Show."

Seinfeld will join previously announced musical guests Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West. The weeknight prime-time series debuts Sept. 14.

Leno stepped down in May as host of the "Tonight Show" after 17 years.

Seinfeld, who starred in his own hit NBC comedy, will be returning to the network early next year with "The Marriage Ref," a reality series that he'll produce.

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — Brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Claudette threatened to bring heavy rain to the Florida Panhandle later Sunday, likely becoming the first tropical storm to strike the U.S. mainland this year.

Claudette had winds of at least 50 mph, but was not expected to cause significant flooding or wind damage. Lurking more ominously in the Atlantic were tropical storms Ana and Bill, which was quickly turning into a powerful storm over warm waters in the open Atlantic.

At Pensacola Beach, surfers under gray skies enjoyed the waves and tourists mingled on the beach, despite a tropical storm warning covering most of the Panhandle, from the Alabama state line to the Suwanee River more than 300 miles to the east.

Miguel Gonzalez, on vacation from North Carolina, was unconcerned about the storm as he readied his children for day on Pensacola Beach. But he said his family would head in if the rain started.

"We will just stay out there for an hour or so, take a few pictures and then leave," he said.

Rainfall of 3 to 5 inches was expected, with isolated areas getting up to 10 inches, forecasters said.

"We may see some heavy rains as a result, but we don't expect any high winds or coastal flooding," said John Dosh, manager of Emergency Management. "This event is a good example of how quickly a tropical storm can develop. We won't always have a lot of warning. This is why citizens need to be prepared throughout hurricane season."

Pensacola Beach is still recovering from Hurricane Ivan, which devastated the western Florida Panhandle and parts of Alabama in 2004.

At 2 p.m. EDT, Claudette was about 40 miles south of Apalachicola and moving northwest near 14 mph. Its center was expected to reach the northern Gulf Coast by Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ana had top sustained winds of 40 mph and was expected to make landfall at the Leeward Islands early Monday. Watches were posted for Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Antigua, St. Maarten and several other islands in the area. Ana was forecast to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain.

Tropical Storm Bill, however, was intensifying far from land in the open Atlantic, and could become a hurricane Monday.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Guillermo had winds of 100 mph, but was expected to lose steam in the next day or two. Guillermo was moving west at 15 mph, about 1,150 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, and didn't threaten any land.

Despite the three tropical storms and a hurricane, a warmer weather pattern called El Nino over the Pacific Ocean is generally expected to damper the formation of tropical storms in the Caribbean and Atlantic this year, said Brian Daly, a meteorologist with the national weather service in Mobile, Ala.

"It's pretty frequent that an El Nino year would be somewhat delayed with fewer storms," Daly said.

Forecasters revised their Atlantic hurricane season predictions after the first two months of the season passed without any named storms developing.

JACKSON, Mississippi - Jim Dickinson, a musician and producer who helped shape the Memphis sound in an influential career that spanned more than four decades, has died. He was 67.

His wife, Mary Lindsay Dickinson, said he died Saturday in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital after three months of battling heart and intestinal bleeding problems. The couple lived in Hernando, Mississippi.

Dickinson recently had bypass surgery and was undergoing rehabilitation at Methodist University Hospital when he died around 4:30 a.m., his wife said.

Perhaps best known as the father of Luther and Cody Dickinson, two-thirds of the Grammy-winning North Mississippi Allstars, Dickinson recorded and produced with greats like Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Big Star, the Rolling Stones and Sam and Dave.

With regard to item #7, I don’t see how anyone could be “astounded.” Isn’t this the same city where one columnist referred to the former #7 as “Ron Mexico”?

But, hey, it’s all Philadelphia’s problem now. Hope they have fun.

Seven random thoughts on No.7 before the Michael Vick press conference starts, which I’ll be monitoring . . .

♦ 1.) Does this mean the United Football League is going to fold — and what to do now with all of those No. 7 Florida Tuskers jerseys? (Did anybody really believe that ever was going to happen? Suckers.)

♦ 2.) Here’s an idea: Sell the jerseys to Arthur Blank! The Falcons’ owner is trying to make up for some of the cash he lost after the Vick-fueled franchise collapse. But how happy is he today? He now knows he’ll have at least one sellout this season (Dec. 6 vs. Eagles), and if he’s smart he’ll break out all of those Falcons’ No. 7 jerseys that he has in storage and sell them outside the Georgia Dome game week. What do you suppose complete MV7 set of Falcon-Leavenworth-Tusker-Eagle jerseys would go for?

♦ 3.) This just in: football coaches lie. Yes, shocking but true, the Eagles were one of over 20 teams that publicly shot down any thoughts of Vick signing with their team. This from coach Andy Reid just over two weeks ago: “Number one, I think he’s a good kid Right now we have a good situation at quarterback so that’s not the direction I’m looking. I’m glad Tony Dungy is involved, no finer person around than Tony Dungy. And Michael, the times I’ve talked to him, he’s a good kid, so I think that combination there will help Michael and probably increase his marketability there.”

♦ 4.) It’s a testament to how well great NFL franchises can keep a secret that word of Philadelphia’s interest in Vick never leaked out, especially in the days of message boards, blogs, blind reader commenting and every third cousin of the equipment manager Twittering. And how must ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, a former AJC comrade, feel? He actually had the Eagles listed as a possible destination for Vick early in the week but removed them after speaking to Reid.

♦ 5.) There has been a loud reaction from the significant number of remaining Vick supporters in Atlanta since the signing. But can you imagine what the response would have been if the Falcons hadn’t turned things around with Matt Ryan last season? And given this is a franchise that never has had consecutive winning seasons, the last thing Blank needs is for his team to be 4-7 going into the Eagles game.

♦ 6.) Had to laugh at the response from former Falcons coach Dan Reeves, who, when asked on 680 The Fan Friday morning whether Vick could ever play wide receiver: “No chance. He can’t catch. We tried to [practice] some plays out of the shotgun.”

♦ 7) Just got off the phone after my second radio interview of the morning. The guy on the other end was astounded by how divided the Eagles’ fan base was over the signing and couldn’t seem to get over that people were saying such mean and nasty things about Vick and each other. Dude, you have no idea.
